Jazero Izra

Jazero Izra

Slanská Huta

A very popular spot for vacationers in the Slanské vrchy mountains, on the southeastern foot of Veľký Milič, is Jazero Izra. Its name originated from the word "jozra", which translates from Hungarian as lake. It is located in the cadastral territory of the village of Slanská Huta, at an altitude of 445 m above sea level. It boasts an area of 5.1 ha and a maximum depth of 7 m. However, it was not here forever, but formed gradually through landslides of soil and rocks that created a sort of natural dam.

In Slovakia, various myths or legends are tied to many places, and Jazero Izra is no exception. In ancient times, Izra, the daughter of a Turkish Grand Vizier, reportedly fell in love with a Hungarian count, who was an enemy. When they were in a boat together with Izra, her father shot the count. Out of grief, Izra jumped into the lake, which forever buried her together with her great love, the Hungarian count.

Whether Izra actually went boating on the lake is something we will probably never find out. What is certain, however, is that you can go boating on it. And not only that, you can also swim or go fishing. The surroundings of the lake are beautiful, quiet, and full of greenery. It is virtually tailor-made for peaceful family walks or hiking to the surrounding nature reserves. You will be close to Veľký Milič, Malý Milič, and Marocká hoľa. So when you set out here, be sure to bring hiking boots in addition to your swimsuit.

Jazero Izra is accessible directly from the village of Slanská Huta, from where it can be reached in several ways. Either along a paved road by motor vehicle, by bicycle along a marked cycling trail, or on foot following the green hiking trail. So take a trip and book your accommodation near Jazero Izra, ideally on the accommodation Slanská Huta page. Bring your family or friends, do not forget your swimsuit and hiking shoes, and come experience great relaxation.

Trebišov

The landmark of Trebišov is a charming Baroque-Neoclassical manor house that was once a magnificent residence of the noble Andráši family (Andrášiovci). The town of Trebišov, the center of Southern Zemplín, is located in the southwestern part of the Východoslovenská nížina lowland. Part of the region is the world-famous Tokaj wine region, offering first-class quality wines. The Trebišov district offers many options for recreation and relaxation, whether you set off for a walk through nature reserves of floodplain forests, fruit orchards, or the charming hills of the Slanské vrchy mountains. However, we invite you to take a tour of a museum that will tell you about the rich and interesting history of this picturesque district.

Manor house and its history

The manor was built on the remains of the local castle Parič by Count Imrich Csáky in 1786. The Andráši family inherited the residence in the first half of the 19th century and rebuilt the property in Neo-Renaissance style, without neglecting the extensive garden. The new owners transformed it into a beautiful French park with a rich representation of exotic tree species. The Andráši family also had a Neo-Gothic family tomb built in their park, as was the tradition among upper classes in the 19th century. At the beginning of the First World War, the furnishings of the manor house were transported to other Andráši residences in Budapest and Tiszadob. After the Second World War, the manor served until 1978 as a hospital with a polyclinic, and after a subsequent reconstruction, the Vlastivedné múzeum museum (established in Sečovce as early as the 1950s) moved into the premises of the former manor house in 1981. Since 2012, the museum bears a new name, Múzeum a Kultúrne centrum južného Zemplína v Trebišove. The institution specializes in the history of agriculture and Tokaj viticulture, collecting and displaying many historically valuable items presenting the history of the Trebišov district.

Expositions

The museum offers exceptionally interesting expositions that will delight all age groups and enthusiasts of various fields. Whether you are interested in traditional crafts, the history of agriculture, tractors, archaeology, folk clothing, or like to enjoy a golden drink, you will be thrilled by everything you can see in the complex. Machinery fans will appreciate the exposition of the steam plowing set or the exposition of agricultural machinery and mechanisms from the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Have you ever wondered how grain is processed? In that case, you will certainly be interested in the exhibition documenting the history of grain threshing from flails to modern combine threshing. If you want to learn more about the traditions of Southern Zemplín, you cannot miss the exposition presenting traditional disappearing and extinct crafts of Zemplín, especially rope making, blacksmithing, and wheelwrighting.

Artistic souls will enjoy the exposition of folk wood carving and sculpture of Zemplín, or the exhibition presenting folk clothing of Southern Zemplín from the first half of the 20th century. On a different note, the exhibition Andrášiovci na Trebišovsku reveals the history and manors of the noble family. And finally, one of the museum's greatest treasures is hidden in the cellar space. Located there is an exposition of Tokaj viticulture and winemaking in Slovakia. It is complemented by a unique archive of Tokaj wines, presenting producers of this unique beverage and collecting new samples. If the rich selection of permanent expositions were not enough for you, you will certainly be captivated by one of the thematic exhibitions of fine arts, phillumeny, ethnography, history, numismatics, or art. After visiting the exhibitions, you can indulge in a tasting of Tokaj varietal, quality, and selection wines at the Tokajská vináreň u Andrássyho wine cellar.

Archeologický skanzen

Nižná Myšľa

The archaeological open-air museum in the village of Nižná Myšľa is situated in a location considered one of the richest archaeological sites in our country recording prehistoric settlements. Among the sites, Skalka was mentioned first, followed by Alamenev, Koscelek, Moľva, Prepoštstvo, and Váhreď (Varhégy).

Replicas of original dwellings from the Early and Middle Bronze Age, which disappeared around 1400 BC, are built in the last-mentioned site. The first archaeological research began as early as 1948, and systematic research has been underway since 1977. Approximately 2,300 vessels and 5,000 stone, bone, and bronze objects with various purposes were found. Archaeological artifacts are displayed in the municipal museum located in the historical building of a 13th-century manor house.

The complex of two settlements and a burial ground, which together form the archaeological site, is located south behind the village of Nižná Myšľa on a small hill at an altitude of 217 m above sea level. Fortified Settlement I represents the oldest settlement of the Ottoman-Füzesabony culture. The settlement measured 50 x 60 m with an entrance via a wooden-and-stone structure. Dwellings had wooden walls and a clay-smeared floor. Log-built houses also featured raised hearths. The settlement had an agricultural and craft character; objects made of antler, bronze, stone, and various clay sculptures were discovered here.

Fortified Settlement II was established as a result of population growth and expanded into an area of 8 hectares with a stone, earth, and wood rampart. Houses, including farm buildings, were log-built. The settlement was a cult center where various bloody cultic rituals were performed. Mostly animals were sacrificed, though human sacrifices occurred exceptionally. Settlers engaged in pottery, bone and antler processing, and non-ferrous metalworking.

In the burial ground located 200 meters from the settlement, more than 900 graves were discovered, with each containing numerous grave goods. Burials were carried out in a crouched position facing east, with women lying on their left side and men on their right side. Warriors, farmers, craftsmen, and hunters had wooden supports, remnants of wooden coffins, or even two-part sarcophagi in their graves.

You can reach the site via two color-marked trails: the blue cycling trail or the red hiking trail. This is a comprehensive showcase, so it is advisable to set aside plenty of time to explore not only the open-air museum, but also the entire surroundings of Košice and its attractions. We recommend booking suitable accommodation in the surrounding area on the accommodation Košice page, and then simply planning your trip.

Čanianske jazerá

Čanianske jazerá

Čaňa

In the largest village of the Košice-okolie district, in Čaňa, there is a complex of several lakes known as Čanianske jazerá. They were formed during gravel extraction, progressively from 1854. At that time, surface gravel and soil mines were opened here due to the construction of the railway between Košice and Miskolc. Currently, the lakes (except for one) are used for recreation.

The best-known of the local lakes is called Tajvan by the locals. It is the most frequently visited because it is the only one adapted for tourism. It has beaches covered with gravel, and a cottage area is located nearby. During the summer, locals especially like to spend their time here during free evenings. Indeed, it is the venue for discos held directly under the starry sky. The only disadvantage is the fact that swimming is not permitted here for hygienic reasons. However, if you also want to swim, choose the slightly less known gravel pit Geča. There you can both swim and relax. It is nothing unusual to meet fishermen there either. An unofficial nudist beach is even located on its shores. So if you decide to cool off during a hot summer just like that, while walking around the surroundings, you don't have to worry about the swimsuit that stayed at home.

If you also want to visit the beautiful Čanianské jazerá, it is very simple. The first step should be booking accommodation in the vicinity of Čanianské jazerá, ideally directly on the website accommodation Čaňa. But if you yearn for the hustle and bustle of a larger city, look at the offer of the website accommodation Košice. These are located only about 15 km from Čaňa and offer many tips for trips. Another step should be planning the activities you want to manage during your stay. And the last, yet equally important step will be deciding whom you will take with you. A holiday, no matter how great, for example even the one at Čanianské jazerá, is much better when you share the experiences with your loved ones.
